Hotels-Japan

In general there are 4 hotel classifications in Japan.

Tourist hotels (including traditional Ryokan) catering to tourist needs,

Business hotels (including capsule hotels) focusing on domestic business travelers with limited non-Japanese language skills but very adequate and clean places to stay and often with same amenities as less expensive tourist hotels.  These tend to be less expensive than tourist hotels and since they are not on the tourist hotel lists they are often available when tourist hotels are all full.

Love Hotels – As you can imagine these do not focus on tourist needs and are usually booked for hours instead of days.

Onsen (hot spring hotels) which seldom cater to tourists but which often include the full range of hot spring baths as well as fixed set meals.

I highly recommend Business hotels for the budget traveler.
